It’s a game, and an agent for change
~ Vancouver's street soccer league players are using the sport to have some fun, as a springboard to changes and as a route to finding a new sense of community.
The soccer league allows people with low incomes to participate in an organized sports league without having to worry about fees: It is open to everyone and has led to change for many players.
Along with offering people a chance to live a healthy lifestyle, the league has also helps its players find housing, jobs and help with substance abuse. The league also offers players opportunities to play in several tournaments a year, including playing against a team of Vancouver Police Department officers, and playing in the Homeless World Cup.
These athletes have found a sense of support with their teams and it has given them a sense of family in a community surrounded by negativity.
